What is a rego check (pink slip) in NSW?
A rego check, also called a pink slip, is a vehicle safety inspection report required for cars over five years old in New South Wales. It confirms that the vehicle is roadworthy and meets legal safety standards for registration renewal. The inspection typically covers essential systems such as brakes, tyres, suspension, lights, seatbelts, and steering. Once completed, the results are sent electronically to Transport for NSW, allowing you to complete your registration online or in person.
How long does a rego check take?
Most rego checks take about 30–45 minutes, depending on the vehicle's condition. During this time, the licensed inspector will check key safety components including lights, tyres, windscreen, wipers, brakes, seatbelts, and any signs of oil leaks or structural damage. If your vehicle passes, the result is submitted immediately to Transport for NSW. If it doesn’t, you typically have 14 days to complete repairs and return for a re-check.
What happens if my vehicle fails the rego check?
If your car fails the rego check, you'll receive a report detailing what needs fixing. You then have 14 days to complete the required repairs and return to the same inspection station for a free follow-up inspection. If repairs aren’t completed within that timeframe, a new pink slip inspection is required. Common reasons for failure include worn tyres, oil leaks, brake issues, or non-functional lights.
